Each year five Girl Scouts are chosen to be a Shadow Girl to one of the five Distinguished Women’s Award Reception honorees. Our very own junior, Rebekah Kempske, has been chosen. Shadow Girls spend a day with an honoree for an up-close look at how she manages her time, staff and family/community responsibilities. It’s a unique one-on-one, hands-on experience from which you can learn from women who are some of the best of their chosen professions. Rebekah will be spending the day with Joyce Ulrich, the Chief Information Officer at Legg Mason.

The Girl Scouts Distinguished Women’s Award Reception will be held on April 24, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. at the Baltimore Country Club, Roland Park. This annual event honors prominent women in Maryland. The event proceeds support the efforts of Girl Scouts to develop strong girls in all sectors of society by giving them the opportunity to observe an interact with creative and dynamic women leaders in central Maryland.

Congratulations Rebekah!

Rebekah Kempske Participated in Day with an Engineer Program

Rebekah Kempske '15 is the fourth student from The Catholic High School of Baltimore to participate in the Day with an Engineer (DWE) program sponsored by The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), Baltimore Post on Wednesday, February 19, 2014.  Shelby Kestler '12, Samantha Sullivan '13 and Monica Perumattam ’14 participated in the program during the past three school years and had enjoyable and beneficial experiences.  It is the 4th year in a row we have had a STEM participant.

Mrs. Lauren Buckler, who is the Director of Energy Performance and Conservation for the state, was Rebekah’s mentor. Rebekah visited with the office of Energy and Engineering in the Maryland Department of General Services (DGS). The first half of the day she visited Annapolis where she was able to sit in on a meeting with a Senator dealing with a bill about Green Building code. Rebekah said, “It was interesting to see how engineering and the government can work together and the problems a bill can encounter.”

She then visited the construction site of a restoration of the old Senate chamber. She explained that their goal is to restore the Senate chamber to the way it looked like during the time of George Washington. Rebekah found it fascinating to listen to and see their plans for the Senate chamber and how every exact detail had to match the original Senate chamber. After lunch, Rebekah went back to the Department of General Services building and joined about seven people where she was able to hear about what they do and how they got to be there. Some of the positions consisted of architects, project managers, an energy database program administrator, and the secretary of the Department of General Services.

When asked about what she learned Rebekah said, “I learned a lot about what goes into a project from start to finish. I saw numerous construction drawings and floor plans, which I found interesting and became fully aware of how every tiny detail matters. I also learned that being a mechanical engineer and architect you can work on a variety of different projects and do not have to be limited to one subject area. For example, several people were working on projects which ranged from the building for the Maryland medical examiner to a juvenile detention center, which I found to be very cool. My experience will also help me to apply real world examples to what I learn in not just my STEM courses, but in all of my classes.”

The Daily Record named Dr. Barbara D. Nazelrod, President and proud graduate of The Catholic High School of Baltimore, to its 2014 listing of Maryland’s Top 100 Women. The Daily Record began Maryland’s Top 100 Women in 1996 to recognize outstanding achievement by women demonstrated through professional accomplishments, community leadership and mentoring. Three hundred and seventy women were nominated for the statewide honor. A panel of judges comprised of business professionals and past Maryland’s Top 100 Women winners from throughout Maryland reviewed the applications and selected this year’s honorees.

“Through Maryland’s Top 100 Women, The Daily Record recognizes 100 amazing leaders for stellar achievements in their careers, for their exemplary citizenship and for encouraging and shaping the lives of a younger generation through mentoring,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, publisher of The Daily Record. “These women share an amazing talent for balancing many facets of their lives. And we’re pretty certain they mastered what we all desire—the ability to get 25 hours of daily work done in an allotted 24.”

The awards will be presented at a cocktail reception on Monday, May 5. Winners will be profiled in a special magazine that will be inserted into the Friday, May 9, issue of The Daily Record and available online at www.TheDailyRecord.com.

Congratulations and special thanks to Dr. Nazelrod for her outstanding leadership and dedication to The Catholic High School of Baltimore.

Hannah Grice ‘16 Earned the Carson Scholar Award for the Third Time!

Hannah Grice is a sophomore here at Catholic High and was honored for the third time as a Carson Scholar! Carson Scholarships are awarded to students in grades 4-11 who exemplify academic excellence and humanitarian qualities. Carson Scholars must have a GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through community service. The winners receive a $1,000 scholarship to be invested toward their college education, along with a recognition package, and an invitation to attend an awards banquet.

"The Carson Scholars Fund, Inc. was founded in 1994 to address the education crisis in the United States. When world-renowned Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurosurgeon Benjamin S. Carson, M.D. and his wife, Candy, read a research study about education in the United States, they were alarmed by the findings. The study showed that our nation’s students ranked #21 out of 22 countries; next to the bottom of the list in science and math. Furthermore, the Carsons observed that many school display cases were filled with large trophies paying tribute to their sports teams’ achievements, while honor students only received a pin or certificate. Dr. and Mrs. Carson felt compelled to take action. They believed that if children could be taught early to excel, they would stay motivated and have a higher chance of educational success later in life. The Carson Scholars Fund was built on these principles."

To learn more view the Carson Scholars Fund Website.

We congratulate Hannah on her hard-work and determination to achieve this award for the third time. Way to Let Your Light Shine Hannah!
