Last week at Catholic High was Positive Body Image Awareness Week! The idea was shared by Molly McElroy, a Senior, who began her own campaign titled Beautiful Me. Thanks to the help of one of our counselors, Mrs. Price, we were able to make this happen. On Monday, the student body gathered for an assembly where Molly spoke of her own personal experience. When Molly was asked why she wanted to do this campaign she said "I created Beautiful Me because I know how it feels to feel like you’re not enough and not beautiful. I wanted to show girls that no matter what the media or people say we are all beautiful in a different way. Society is like a bouquet of flowers, there is not a flower that is the same." It was very brave of Molly to get up in front of the entire school and we are thankful for her honesty. Kate Clemmer, LCLW-C, is the community outreach coordinator at the center for eating disorders at Sheppard Pratt. She spoke with the girls on Body Image.
On Tuesday, students created posters with the theme Beautiful Me which were placed outside their advisors classrooms. This was a good exercise for them and they were very creative! On Wednesday, Jessica Mahla, another Senior and close friend of Molly's spoke about her own personal experience of witnessing Molly suffer with an eating disorder/negative body image. Mrs. Pat McElroy '78, Molly's mom also spoke about the challenges she experienced with Molly and how it affected her life. This week was very emotional for some, but it was a great way to spread awareness about very serious issues. Their personal experiences helped to emphasize the importance of spreading awareness and remembering everyone is beautiful in some way. To view more pictures from this week, click here.
